Kilauea Eruption Timelapse January 2023 | Lava Lake at Halemaumau Crater | Big Island Hawaii by Ethan Tweedie

Timelapse of the current eruption on Kilauea. Kilauea started erupting on January 5th 2023 after a short pause, a lava lake has formed inside the Halemaumau Crater on the summit of Kilauea Volcano.

Kīlauea is an active shield volcano located on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with frequent eruptions that have shaped the island's landscape. Kīlauea is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and is known for its lava flows, crater formations, and dramatic volcanic activity, attracting visitors from around the globe. The volcano has a rich cultural significance to Native Hawaiians and offers an incredible opportunity to witness ongoing volcanic processes up close.

Mauna Loa Eruption Images | November 29th, 2022 | First Eruption in 38 Years 29th 2022 by Ethan Tweedie

On Day 2 of the Mauna Loa eruption, I had the incredible opportunity to capture the raw beauty and intensity of the world's largest active volcano as it erupted for the first time in 38 years. These images were taken in the early morning hours off Saddle Road on the Big Island of Hawaii, where the dramatic glow of the lava illuminated the night sky.

This eruption is especially meaningful to me, as I was a junior in high school in 1984, the last time Mauna Loa erupted. It’s awe-inspiring to witness this natural phenomenon once again after nearly four decades. The power of the eruption and the landscape it has shaped is nothing short of spectacular.

For those interested in seeing the eruption in real-time, I filmed a timelapse during my shoot. You can catch the footage and follow my updates on Instagram for more exclusive content.

Enjoy the images, and thank you for following along as I capture this extraordinary moment in Hawaii’s volcanic history.

Photography of the Only Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Hawaii | Waimea | Big Island by Ethan Tweedie

In 2015, I had the distinct honor of photographing the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in the State of Hawaii. To my surprise, this architectural gem was located in my own hometown of Waimea, Hawaii, which made the experience even more extraordinary.

This stunning home was based on an unbuilt design by Frank Lloyd Wright from 1954. While the project was initially shelved, it was brought to life in 1995, thanks to the meticulous plans created by Taliesin Associated Architects in Scottsdale, Arizona. This firm is affiliated with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which is the sole entity authorized to oversee the construction of Wright’s unbuilt works. Local builder Hans Torweihe oversaw the home's construction, with recent interior design work by Willman Interiors.

The home sits on nearly 3 acres of land, perched on a bluff that overlooks the beautiful Keanuiomano Stream. In the distance, the majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai volcanoes provide a breathtaking backdrop. The property is strategically positioned to take full advantage of some of the most panoramic and scenic views on the Big Island.

This one-of-a-kind property is privately owned, but Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts and vacationers alike have the rare opportunity to rent this architectural masterpiece. For those interested, more information is available through the property’s Airbnb Link

Milky Way Photography Over Kilauea Lava Lake | Hawaii Volcanoes National Park by Ethan Tweedie

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island is home to Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. This stunning natural wonder provides an incredible backdrop for capturing the Milky Way, especially with the glowing Lava Lake at the summit lighting up the night sky.

On the night of August 20th, 2022, I set out to photograph the Milky Way at this iconic location. The timing was perfect, as the moon wouldn't rise until around 12:30 AM, giving us a dark sky and unobstructed views of the Lava Lake in all its glowing glory.

The first image, captured just after sunset, shows the Milky Way starting to emerge on the far left, while the Lava Lake’s glow intensifies. As the night darkened, the Milky Way gradually shifted into a perfect alignment directly above the Lava Lake, as seen in Image 2. By the time the clouds drifted by in Image 3, they were illuminated by the brilliant glow of the Lava Lake below, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

Spending five hours in this awe-inspiring location was an unforgettable experience, and the imagery that unfolded was a testament to the incredible natural beauty of the Big Island.

If you're interested in seeing the timelapse I captured during this shoot, you can view it here: Milky Way Time Lapse.

Enjoy the adventure through my lens!
